At Demure Lyfe, every herb we offer is ethically sourced and sustainably harvested, honoring both my Ramapough Lenape heritage and my commitment to the Earth. These sacred plants—Sweetgrass, Tobacco, and White Sage—are one of the original trinity’s in Smudging.
I personally hand-wrap all the White Sage bundles and braid all the Sweetgrass sold in my shop. I do this because each Plant carries a Spirit… a essence… a personality. The best way to become acquainted with it is to learn them and how they like to be treated. Especially if you would like to invoke the plant to work for you… ya know?
White Sage is the ultimate cleanser, preparing spaces, tools, and individuals for sacred work. Fun fact not a lot of people know about White Sage is that it removes ALL energy and leaves things at a neutral setting vs. cleansed as people assume. This is where the her sisters Tobacco and Sweetgrass come in. When using White Sage you have to follow up with “Fulfillment” to imbue new intentions … otherwise using White Sage alone can feel like nothing worked.
Sweetgrass we call the “hair of Mother Earth. It symbolizes kindness, balance, and unity. Its sweet, uplifting aroma is used to invite positive energy, good spirits, and blessings into a space. Braiding Sweetgrass reflects the connection of mind, body, and spirit- and/or the Ancestors, Present People, and the Descendants. These are focuses that have become grounding practices rooted in our traditions.
Tobacco, known as the first medicine in our traditions, is a bridge to the Creator and ancestral spirits. It carries prayers, gratitude, and intentions, grounding ceremonies in respect and spiritual connection. While I honor Tobacco’s importance as a sacred medicine, Demure Lyfe does not sell Tobacco- I would need to obviously need to carry certain licenses to sell it. But if I have some personal stash, I may share it with those that come to the Shoppe.
As a closing to any ceremony, I offer loose Tobacco to the Earth, expressing gratitude and asking for guidance. This practice strengthens the spiritual connection and sets the tone for meaningful work to be done.
I remember with my Mother’s passing, one of my Elders laid tobacco around my Mother’s casket. I remember thinking how pleased she would be by that gesture- and it was soothing to me in that moment to witness.
